Our focus areas
Global Burden of Disease (GBD) and forecasting
Quantifying the most comprehensive and comparable data on health outcomes and drivers across the world by age, sex, location, and year and forecasting the impact into the future in order to inform donors, policymakers, and health system decision-makers how to focus efforts to improve health.
Building the field of health metrics
Training the next generation of scholars to develop and apply innovative scientific methods to measure and analyze health data in order to inform policy, improve health care outcomes, and guide public health initiatives.
Apply expertise of metrics to education
Creating a comparable and comprehensive framework to assess education drivers, outcomes, and disparities.
Value and health systems
Analyzing the capacity of and emerging demands on health systems amid epidemiological transitions, assessing disease expenditures and intervention impacts, and evaluating the impact of investments in policies and interventions.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and global health
Exploring avenues to expand our scientific knowledge and capabilities by applying large language models to test innovations, maximize the use of our resources, make sense of more and more data, and to arrive at findings more efficiently and on a larger scale.
Mapping future health risks
Tracking health threats and opportunities to implement effective policies and interventions to mitigate their impact by developing an understanding of real-time population movements and their relation to critical resources and social conditions, such as water scarcity or the presence of refugee camps.
Gender and equity
Illuminating disparities in both data and outcomes in order to arrive at a more comprehensive picture of health outcomes and drivers and to identify avenues to achieve more equitable outcomes.
Climate change
Quantifying the impact of climate change on health outcomes, tracking trends, and evaluating interventions to understand health risks associated with changing environmental conditions.
